Summary

Built at a time when asbestos was routinely used in construction, the UK's ageing nuclear reactors can contain significant amounts of asbestos. Tersus ensures that asbestos is safely managed during the decommissioning phase as each site progresses towards a state of ‘Care and Maintenance’ prior to demolition.

A fully comprehensive range of specialist services

Our customer is defined as a 'duty holder' in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and is responsible for the safe management of asbestos across their sites. They outsource specialist, UKAS accredited services to Tersus to enable them to provide a safe working environment.

Due to the unique nature of each site and the high level of data security required, Tersus utilise the Client's bespoke asbestos database for data capture and reporting.

  • UKAS accredited air monitoring and fibre counting
  • UKAS accredited surveying (re-inspections, management, refurbishment and demolition)
  • UKAS accredited bulk sampling and on-site analysis
  • NEC3 Contract administration
  • Laboratory and analytical service maintenance
  • Occupational Hygiene Services
  • Use of customer’s bespoke asbestos management database

Contract Mobilisation and Collaboration

The initial contract mobilisation in 2021 included a TUPE transfer of more than 30 people into our business, who now form 6 site based teams operating from the station offices.

  • Triple Bar Trained and BPSS vetted
  • Designated Contract Management Team

  • The transfer of UKAS accreditation for the site-based laboratories from the outgoing supplier to our UKAS accreditation.

Collaboration

From the earliest stages of the initial tender process, it was clear that the Client required a supplier who could not only provide specialist technical services but a supplier which could collaborate effectively as part of a Tri-party working group, to enable effective asbestos management across the entire uk fleet. Tersus, the Client and our counterparts in the North share a common goal and hold weekly calls to consider resources, the customer’s bespoke database, forthcoming works and continuous improvement; supporting each other as necessary.

Delivering tangible social value

Tersus is committed to delivering social value on our contracts and in 2023 we were shortlisted as finalists for the UKATA Contribution to the Community Award. The contract has provided many opportunities for career progression for many Tersus employees. The complexity and scale of the fleet coupled with the client’s commitment to safe asbestos management and regulatory compliance has also provided opportunities to recruit and develop Trainees from the communities local to the sites. This has not only reduced carbon emissions by but has created opportunities for employment and investment in local skills.

Tersus has also supported several social value initiatives, including charitable donations, sponsorship of community centres and contributing to the annual supply chain partner charity event, which raised £27k in June 2023 for St Margaret’s Hospice.
