Managing your asbestos
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 places an explicit duty on all those responsible for workplaces to have an effective plan for managing asbestos. This is so that your workforce, visitors to your premises, your own maintenance people and contractors can be protected from the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos fibre. This Asbestos Management Plan must be a written document dealing with your asbestos management policy and the arrangements you have in place to make sure that policy is effective. The following steps outline where we can help you through the different stages needed in order to ensure compliance:
Desktop Study/GAP Analysis
Tersus’ desktop study provides our clients with their first step to ensuring their business is on course for full compliance under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Tersus will undertake a gap analysis which examines what our clients have done so far and identifies any gaps. We work with our clients to bring their asbestos management up to date and compliant with the current asbestos legislation. We then work with our clients to ensure they remain compliant.
Surveying your portfolio
The dutyholder must ensure that a suitable and sufficient assessment, or survey, is carried out as to whether asbestos is or is liable to be present in the premises. One way of ensuring the quality of this information is to use an organisation accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) to ISO/IEC 17020. The survey and assessment method currently accepted by UKAS is the HSE’s Guidance HSG264, Asbestos: The survey guide.
Creating a searchable asbestos survey database
Our survey reports are easy to use over the web 24 hours a day. Finding asbestos information within the report may be detailed as a single room or single entry meaning that precise asbestos location details can be extracted quickly allowing contractors to safely carry out work in the area safe in the knowledge that all ACM’s have been identified.
Developing a site specific management plan
Our survey, and the subsequent priority and material assessment of ACMs detected, forms the basis of your management plan. Asbestos removal is not the only course of action; the regulations also allow for treatment, encapsulation or just management on site and our impartial asbestos surveys will set out the best course of action for you.
Sometimes removal is the best or only option, and we will tell you if this is the case. We will then work with you to develop a timetable and budget for removal, and go on to manage the removal process for you. This includes preparing a removal specification and seeking quotes for the work, validating responses to ensure appropriate and safe methods of work, overseeing works on site and providing the Certificate of Re-Occupation as your proof of a job completed safely and to the required standards.
Updating your database
Where we are involved from beginning to end with your asbestos management, it is a simple step to update your database following any removals. This ensures that you and your staff are always viewing the most up to date information online.
Re-inspecting in accordance with the management plan
With the Management Plan complete and up to date, a timetable for re-inspection can be created. This would only require a re-visit to the areas where asbestos has been previously found but not removed. If the condition has changed then this is recorded in the database, detailing any new risk, priority scores and recommendations to ensure continuing compliance with the law.
